Dr. Suong Van Hoa is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Industrial and Aerospace Engineering at Concordia University. He also served as chair of the Department from 1994 till 2000, and again from 2003 till 2006. He formed the Concordia Center for Composites in 1993, and he has been its director since then until now. He conceived and formed the Canadian Association for Composite Structures and Materials (CACSMA) in 1988. He was its president from 1988 till 1989, and again from 1999 until 2014.

Dr. Hoa has been working on composites since 1979. He has worked on various aspects of composites spanning from Material Characterization, Testing, Finite element analysis of composite structures, Development of new materials, Nanocomposites to Design and Manufacturing. From 2012, he has been working on Automated Composites Manufacturing, and since 2016, he has pioneered the topic of 4D printing of composites, of which he will talk about today.

Dr. Hoa is a member of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. He is a life member and World Fellow of the International Committee on Composite Materials. He is also fellow of many learned societies such as the American society of Mechanical Engineers, American Society for Composites, Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Institute of Canada. He has received many awards including the Synergy award from the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
